+ BUTLER - PA
See also HOUSE MANAGER and EXECUTIVE HOUSEKEEPER.
Unless there is a house manager or executive housekeeper, the butler oversees the day to day operation of the house and maintenance projects.

Supervises other employees, receives guests, directs serving of meals and performs various personal services.
Employs, dismisses and settles disputes between members of the household staff.
Deals with all security arrangements.
Together with the chef/cook helps to plan all catering needs at the residence. Co-ordinates, and is present at, all functions hosted by the employer.
Organises employer's travel arrangements.
Oversees and pays all household accounts. Budgeting.
Monitors all incoming telephone calls.
Places orders for wines and spirits, newspapers, household cleaning materials and heating fuel.
Carries out regular stock checks on all china, crystal and other objets d'art; arranging repair/replacement where necessary.
Co-ordinates maintenance projects such as equipment repair, painting, servicing of machinery, window cleaning, carpet and soft furnishing, cleaning etc.
Carries out any other task the employer may reasonably ask.

+ CHAUFFEUR - FAMILY
A chauffeur can be employed either in a private or commercial environment or a mixture of the two. Family chauffeurs are flexible and friendly and will drive all members of the family including children.

Safely and quickly drives the employer and/or family to business meetings and social functions.
Ensures the car(s) are clean, tidy and serviceable.
Carries out routine car maintenance.
Carries out basic gardening and house maintenance.
Runs errands, undertakes 'school runs' and walks dogs.
Maintains records of mileage, servicing etc.
Carries out any other task the employer may reasonably ask.

+ CHAUFFEUR - COMPANY
A chauffeur can be employed either in a private or commercial environment or a mixture of the two. A company chauffeur enables busy senior executives to productively utilise their travelling time.

Safely and quickly drives the employer and/or family to business meetings and social functions.
Ensures the car(s) are clean, tidy and serviceable.
Carries out routine car maintenance.
Runs errands.
Maintains records of mileage, servicing etc.
Carries out basic office duties (if employed by a company).
Carries out any other task the employer may reasonably ask.

+ CHAUFFEUR - SECURITY
A security chauffeur will carry out the duties of a company or family chauffeur but, in addition, will provide their employers with a level of personal protection. Often drawn from the ranks of the Police and Armed Forces, they are usually trained in defensive driving techniques.

Safely and quickly drives the employer and/or family to business meetings and social functions.
Ensures the car(s) are clean, tidy and serviceable.
Carries out routine car maintenance.
Runs errands.
Maintains records of mileage, servicing etc.
Carries out basic office duties (if employed by a company).
Carries out any other task the employer may reasonably ask.

+ CHEF/COOK IN CHARGE
Responsible for the preparation and presentation of all food for the employer, his family, his guests and staff.

Presents menus for approval and discusses daily requirements with employer, house manager, executive housekeeper or butler.
Keeps kitchen in good condition, cleaning all surfaces and floors after use. Keeps pots, pans and all work surfaces well cleaned and polished.
Places orders for all supplies and perishables. Stock control.
Is present for all large and most small functions to supervise and ensure correct presentation of all meals/hors d'oeuvre trays etc.
Keeps separate accounts for all functions including staff expenses.
Supervises other kitchen staff..
Oversees the preparation of breakfasts, lunch and some suppers for the residence staff.
Carries out any other task the employer may reasonably ask.

+ COMPANIONS
Provides companionship to the employer whether in the house or when visiting friends and relatives, Dr's appointments, hairdressers, personal shopping for clothes, shoes, make up etc.

Prepares and cooks basic meals taking into consideration any dietary needs.
Will keep the house clean and do washing and ironing.
Shops for groceries.
Deals with tradesmen and receives deliveries.
Answers the telephone.
Keeps household accounts.
Reminds her employer when medication should be taken.

+ COOK/HOUSEKEEPER
A cook/housekeeper has the same duties as the housekeeper but, in addition, will cook meals of family or dinner party standard.

COOK:

Prepares and serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. Clears away, tidies and cleans the kitchen and the room in which the food is consumed.
Presents menus for approval and discusses daily requirements with employer, house manager or butler.
Deals with grocery shopping and maintains accounts.
Places orders for all supplies and perishables. Maintains stock control.
Keeps kitchen in good condition, cleans all surfaces and floors after use. Keeps pots, pans and all work surfaces well cleaned and polished.
Cleans oven after every use.
Ensures refrigerator is clean and out-of-date items discarded.

HOUSEKEEPER:

Tidies and cleans all the bathrooms, bedrooms and living areas which have been used (or supervises a domestic help).
Cleans unused rooms on a less frequent basis (or supervises a domestic help).
Polishes brass and silver. Polishes fine furniture with appropriate cleaning materials.
Cleans the inside only of all reachable windows.
Collects laundry, washes and irons it and returns the items to the appropriate places. Hand washes delicate items.
Arranges dry-cleaning as required; keeping relevant records.
Answers door and telephone as required.
Feeds pets on a regular basis and, where appropriate, exercises them.
Keeps all exterior patios, pathways and steps clean and tidy.
Waters household plants.
Keeps household accounts.
Deals with tradesmen/contractors.
Manages security alarms.
Carries out any other task the employer may reasonably ask.
+ DOMESTIC COUPLE TEAM
Usually, but not exclusively, this is a team consisting of a man and woman where the former is normally responsible for tasks outside the house and the latter works inside the house.  However, flexibility is the key and a good team will help each other out as and when necessary.

There are many permutations of expertise so please refer to  specific job descriptions [eg. housekeeper, estate manager, butler].

+ DOMESTIC HELP
A Domestic help (daily help, maid) works under direction.  If initiative and responsibility is required, a housekeeper should be recruited.

Cleans the residence as directed.
Washes and irons clothes as directed.

+ ESTATE MANAGER
An estate manager focuses upon the estate and property rather than the inside of the house of residence.  

Manages properties owned by the employer ensuring that they are well organised and impeccably maintained.
Controls and promotes the collective operations of all gardening, maintenance and other ground staff.
Develops and sustains financial budgets and accounting requirements for the estate.
Carries out any other task the employer may reasonably ask.

+ EXECUTIVE HOUSEKEEPER
In the absence of a butler or house manager, an executive housekeeper takes overall responsibility for every aspect of the smooth running of a residence and the welfare of the employer's family, staff and guests.

Oversees the day to day operation of the house and maintenance projects.
Supervises other employees, receives guests, directs serving of meals and performs various personal services.
Employs, dismisses and settles disputes between members of the household staff.
Deals with all security arrangements.
Together with the chef/cook helps to plan all catering needs at the residence.  Co-ordinates, and is present at, all functions hosted by the employer.
Organises employer's travel arrangements.
Oversees and pays all household accounts. Also maintains budgets.
Monitors all incoming telephone calls.
Places orders for wines and spirits, newspapers, household cleaning materials and heating fuel.
Carries out regular stock checks on all china, crystal and other objets d'art; arranging repair/replacement where necessary.
In some cases may also undertake 'hands on' housekeeping.

+ GARDENER
Gardeners can vary from those that merely mow the lawns and generally keep the gardens tidy to those qualified in all aspects of gardening including green-house work, herbaceous borders, pruning, vegetable plots etc.
+ HANDYMAN
Serves as 'on-the-scene' maintenance person helping with a variety of household tasks.

Hangs pictures.
Carries out carpentry work.
Replaces lights.
Moves furniture.
Carries out minor electrical work.
Polishes floors of rooms.
Strips and French polishes furniture as required.
Cleans front steps and polishes brass.
Maintains back yard.
Maintains boiler machinery and reports defects to the house manager, butler or executive housekeeper.
Attends to minor plumbing repairs.
Carries out any other task the employer may reasonably ask.

+ HOUSE MANAGER

Cleans bathrooms and dressing rooms.

Makes beds and changes bed linen.
Changes towels.
Tidies guest rooms and attends to their needs.

+ LADY'S MAID
The female equivalent of a valet.

Maintains clothing and shoes for the lady of the house.
Tidies after the lady has dressed or changed.
Launders and presses all personal clothing.
Mends clothes as necessary.
Regularly examines clothes to see when cleaning, pressing or repairs needed.
Shops for the lady of the house.
Packs and unpacks for the lady and for the female house guests when required.
Daily cleans and tidies lady's bathroom and boudoir.
Responsible for the lady's jewellery and its safety and loose cash carried in handbags.  Ensures valuable items are secured when the lady is away.
Helps with general housemaid's duties as directed by the housekeeper or executive housekeeper.
Carries out any other task the employer may reasonably ask.

+ LAUNDRY STAFF
Handles the day-to-day laundry function at the residence with the exception of any dry-cleaning or staff laundry.
Maintains the laundry rooms in a clean and orderly condition.
Maintains suitable working stock levels of laundry materials.
Washes and presses all bed linens and towels, all house towels, table mats, table napkins and table cloths.
Launders the employer's personal items of clothing.
Launders and presses guests' personal laundry as required.
Carries out any other task the employer may reasonably ask.
+ NANNY/COOK/HOUSEKEEPER

+ NANNY/HOUSEKEEPER
Families find that their needs change and some additional duties are necessary to justify retaining a nanny.  Alternatively, a mother at home may require assistance with her pre-school children.  A nanny/housekeeper will always put the welfare of the children first but, in the spare time available, will take on housekeeping duties.

NANNY:

Prepares bottles for babies and looks after feeding equipment.
