The Housekeeper of a residence will have a wide range of responsibilities. From polishing brass and silver, cleaning the insides of all reachable windows, collection of laundry items, feeding pets on a regular basis, keeping all exterior patios and pathways clear to many others. Housekeeper

  • Kitchen assistance

Prepares daily breakfast and afterwards cleans and tidies the kitchen and breakfast room. May be required to prepare light suppers in the evening. Carries out weekly grocery shop if necessary.

  • Household administration

Keeps household accounts, deals with tradesmen and contractors.

  • Laundry

Collects laundry, washes and irons it and returns the items to the appropriate places. Hand washes delicate items. Will deliver and collect dry cleaned items.

  • Household maintenance

keeps all exterior patios, pathways and steps clean and tidy for the employer. Waters household plants to ensure plants remain healthy. Manages security system.

  • Cleaning

Tidies and cleans all the bathrooms, bedrooms and living areas which have been used (or supervises a domestic help).

  • Pets

Feeds pets on a regular basis and, where appropriate, exercises them.

  • Supervisor

Supervision of staff team as well as receiving the client’s guests as required.

  • Other duties

Carries out any other task the employer may reasonably ask.

Skills Required for a Housekeeper

Collaboration

A good Housekeeper will be reliable with excellent attention to detail as they will need the ability to know what needs doing around the residence in a timely manner. Time management is essential. A good knowledge of cleaning methods is desirable as they will be responsible for the cleanliness of all household rooms from general day to day cleaning to curtain and blind cleaning, spillages on carpets and laundry

Flexibility

Flexibility is a must as the demands from the client may change day to day. Some households may have second homes you may move between, seasonally.

Discretion

Discretion is essential as there may be occasions when you are exposed to personal information and events.

Driving License

Housekeeper’s who have a full, clean driving licence and are able to drive the household vehicles are much in demand.

What salary and benefits can a Housekeeper receive?

An average salary for a Housekeeper in the UK is upwards from £38K, with monthly salaries starting at €2.5K a month across Europe.

Salaries will also depend on whether you have a live-in or live-out contract with the client.

Most Housekeepers will work on a 40 hour schedule but will always be flexible depending on the client’s requirements, particularly if the client is not in residence at all times or if you are working across multiple residences/countries.

Days off could be weekends or in the week depending on the residence and the schedule required for the rest of the household team.

Live on the estate

In most cases, it will be preferential for the client to have a Domestic Couple team live on the estate full time and will be provided with accommodation as part of the role. This may be a separate with your own entrance and privacy or may be within the household. This would be included in your contract details.

Flexible Schedule

We don’t automatically undertake a DBS for every candidate that registers with us as sometimes candidates may find their own jobs and only stay on our books for a short while. However if a client employs someone who we introduce and who does not have a current DBS but is required to have one for the position, then we are happy to do this for you.

We are able to supply staff across the whole of the UK, including Scotland and Ireland. We also cover International positions.

No, we provide a free service for candidates who are looking for work and we only invoice clients if they employ a candidate who we have introduced to them.

Unfortunately we do not provide staff for short term assignments, however we do accept some contracts for a minimum of three months upwards.

We absolutely love hearing from candidates with good, relevant experience in private households. Unfortunately without previous experience it is unlikely we will be able to help you but we are always happy to advise. Chauffeurs must have previous experience of working as a private chauffeur and not purely in chauffeur hire services or taxi driving.

A vacancy could be filled within a matter of days or it could take longer. The timescale depends on which candidates are registered at the time of you giving us your vacancy, and whether they match your requirements. Out team will never just send a CV for the sake of it or to ‘make up the numbers’.

We are happy to organise short trials wherever possible, however you need to bear in mind that it might not always be possible if a candidate is in a full time job. In order to address the fact that very occasionally things may not always go to plan, we offer a rebate/replacement period for your peace of mind.

It may not be immediately obvious but there are marked differences between the two. Private housekeepers are usually expected to ‘keep house’ which involves a lot more than just being a great cleaner. They will take into account the entire household and will know to undertake things such as checking the fridge contents for expiry dates, checking larder stocks for items that need replenishing and making sure that there are adequate supplies of all items.  They will usually know how to set a formal table and how to spot any potential maintenance issues. The key difference is that they will almost certainly have better laundry skills and be confident in caring for delicate fabrics and designer clothing. Housekeepers with a hotel background are usually very good at cleaning quickly and efficiently but are used to working in a structured environment based around cleaning only and they can find it hard to adjust to the varying demands within a private household.
